A female Metro police officer was shot during a high-speed chase that ended on the M1 off-ramp at Jan Smuts Avenue.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the officer shot herself in the right leg during said chase at around 1am (26 September).

The officers were chasing a male suspect driving a silver VW Polo, who was arrested and charged with possession of an illegal firearm.

Minnaar stated that the officer sustained a flesh wound to the leg and is currently in a stable condition at Netcare Milpark Hospital.
