Motorists warned of a potentially dangerous sinkhole on Argyle Avenue

After a few weeks of seeing valuable water going to waste on Argyle Avenue just off Jans Smuts Avenue, Joburg Water fixed the pipe. However, it has now become a possibly dangerous sinkhole.

It appears the soil used to fill the hole has started to move and has resulted in a small hole which is visible from the surface of the street. A blue, hard plastic pipe has been placed near the hole as well as an orange safety cone to warn unsuspecting motorists of the possible danger around the area. It is not yet clear what caused the sinkhole.

Traffic has also been disrupted as vehicles have to give way to oncoming cars in both directions.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, confirmed, on 29 June at the last site visit, the water recovery will take some time before the water starts flowing smoothly through the fixed pipe.

“I have asked the Johannesburg Roads Agency to expedite the reinstatement of Argyle Avenue,” said Williams.

“The Joburg Water backfill and cover is temporary.”

Joburg Water has been approached for comment and this story will be updated as soon as comment is received.
