City Power spokesperson Sol Masolo confirmed that their team was on-site. “A distributor that feeds 4th Street in Killarney tripped yesterday due to a cable fault. Repairs were done and power is currently fully restored.”

Building manager for Sloane Square and Glen Eagles, Tash Dagnel said, “It was such a big job so it took hours but in the end, we have electricity. Our heat pumps are still getting fixed as we currently don’t have hot water.”

Parts of Killarney are without electricity after a transformer started to smoke at around 7am this morning, 12 June.

The transformer supplies power to Sloane Square, where is located at as well as nearby blocks of flats on 4th Avenue.

According to residents, the electricity went off and then back on again at around 4am this morning and they think that this may be have been what caused the transformer to smoke.

The owner of two flats at Sloane Square, Max Bera, said he saw the transformer smoking and alerted the neighbourhood awareness WhatsApp group and security company, Vision Tactical who later arrived on the scene.

Bera described how the power outage affected the residents as they did not have lights or hot water.

“I hope City Power comes and sorts it out because we need electricity.”

Vision Tactical arrived on the scene and found that the door to the transformer room was locked. They had to break down the door to access the fire extinguishers to douse the smoking transformer.

We don’t know how long it will take for them to get here,” she said.

The wires of the transformer had burnt but there was still a lingering smell of smoke when Rosebank Killarney Gazette was on the scene at around 9.30am this morning.
