Victim of gunpoint robbery warns motorists

A man was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two males on the evening of 18 May at the intersection of Oxford and Glenhove roads. He was driving north along Oxford Road with the window on the driver’s side about two centimetres open.

While stationery in the left-hand lane and waiting for the traffic light to change so he could turn left onto Bolton Road, the victim was allegedly surprised by a handgun that had been thrust through the small opening in the window. He was allegedly told to hand over his cell phone and he did.

The perpetrators then demanded that he give them any jewellery, which he didn’t have.

By the time they demanded his wallet, the traffic lights changed and the motorists ahead moved forward giving him a chance to drive away unharmed.

The man then drove to his girlfriend’s apartment in Parktown North and contacted his network subscriber to have his phone blocked and blacklisted. He also contacted the Rosebank police to report the incident but was referred to the Norwood Police Station as the location of the incident did not fall under Rosebank’s jurisdiction.

The victim, however, said that he had contacted the Crime Watch Hotline who seemingly showed no interest in the details of the incident. He said that he was unable to submit a formal report at the police station and only managed to fill out an insurance claim form.

The Norwood police stated that there was no record of a case that had been opened related to the incident at the time. The victim said he hoped to alert the police of the presence of armed criminals in the vicinity as well as notify motorists that they were being targeted, particularly during busier hours.

He advised motorists to remember to keep their doors locked, their windows closed and to remove valuables from plain sight in order to avoid a similar unpleasant experience.
