The much-awaited sod-turning ceremony finally took place on 4 May at FWJK Developments’ Illovo Central development site with South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) CEO, Neil Gopal, in attendance.

This second new high-end mixed-use development was an initiative of national property developer FWJK. Over 100 attendees including construction workers put on their safety helmets and gathered outside the construction site and experienced the atmosphere of the construction environment.

“The mixed-use development is a process which is fundamental to our success because we invite the man on the street to be a co-developer,” Rhys Rocke, regional director of FWJK started off. He said Illovo Central was FWJK’s second of four additions to the Illovo skyline which enjoys the highest elevation in the greater part of Sandton.

Rocke explained that this project had an investment value of R700 million and would highly contribute to the local economy. “Adding value through design efficiency has been key to the success of our projects. We have been able to achieve excellent efficiencies and we ensure our investors get maximum value for money.”

Guest speaker Gopal took to the stage and expounded on Sapoa’s important role of protecting the rights of landowners in South Africa. The entity was engaged in and assisting with the draft of a new Constitution Bill which would see all historical imbalances being dealt with.

“We have been going from city to city, speaking to town leaders about property evaluations and the Property Rights Bill being re-visited,” Gopal stated.

He highlighted the importance of rates and taxes generated by private sector property development which help support the municipality in its endeavours to provide affordable housing.

Thereafter the two speakers engaged in the actual sod-turning where they took a shovel and dug, turning over the soil to signify the beginning of construction. The Illovo Central development is due for completion in January 2020.
