A Family Day was the order of the day for the 1st German Scouts group in Parktown as they took on a fun-filled adventure hike at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (located 11km south of Johannesburg).

Scouts (aged 11 to 18 years), Cubs (aged 7 to 10 years) and their parents had a wonderful time meeting each other and bonding over the picturesque nature reserve during the trek on 4 February.

“We split into two groups where one group hiked 10km and another group hiked 14km,” said Kai Sluis-Cremer, a 16-year-old member of the Scout group. “Even though the groups hiked along different routes, they reconnected at a picnic spot to let the parents rest and chat with one another.”

Kai said the groups also learnt about the different species of venomous snakes that are indigenous to South Africa, during a break from the trail. However, Kai said the challenge of hiking along the routes could not be ignored, as the groups continued to forge ahead.

“The hike soon split up again, with the older group taking the more challenging route and the younger group taking the easier route. Not surprisingly, after the gruelling first part of the hike, most of the participants took the easier route but a few brave Scouts and Cubs were undeterred by the challenge and chose the long route.

“The parents, who also partook in the hike, were able to experience first-hand what their children get up to when they are dropped off at Scout and Cub activities, and this gave them a better idea about how tough their children really are. All who participated had a lovely time with their family and Scout friends at the first Scout event of the year. We are excited for a full year of activities ahead.”
