Looking back at Marikana through a series of tweets

The Marikana Massacre that occurred on 16 August 2012 is considered the single most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since 1960. The tragic event that took place at Lonmin Mines was also on the 25-year anniversary of a nationwide South African miners’ strike and claimed the lives of 47 people including miners, two police officers and four security guards.

78 people were fatally wounded at two locations 500 metres from each other. The vast majority of those killed were killed by gunfire from the R5 assault rifle used by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
