A media launch for the Small Business Expo was held at the Goliath and Goliath Comedy Club at Melrose Arch on 2 August and highlighted the importance of small business.

The expo will be a hub for small business development, showcasing new business opportunities and service providers, training and insight for potential entrepreneurs.

The expo will also showcase finalists in the Simama Ranta Entrepreneurship Education Programme which will allow them to gain real world exposure.

The programme identifies, honours and showcases South African secondary schools excelling in preparing their youngsters to become entrepreneurs.

At the media launch Sylvester Chauke, a marketing entrepreneur, highlighted the importance of making a small business stand out and be different.

“We have to be able to build small businesses that are going to be sustainable, that will make an impact and be able to grow into huge businesses and the only way we will be able to that is to make sure we are world class.

“So from my point of view there can be no more basic,” said Chauke.

Chris Bornman, the Eskom Foundation marketing and project manager, initiated the Eskom Business Investment Competition which is open to small black businesses. The finalists in the competition will have the opportunity to showcase their business at this year’s expo.

“Over a thousand small businesses entered and we have 190 finalists,” said Bornman.

He concluded that while many small business owners may be brilliant technically, there is a myriad of red tape that they have to comply with and the competition has been testimony that the expo provides opportunities and recognition for small business owners.

The expo will take place at the TicketPro Dome from 31 August to 2 September.
