UPDATE: Case of mass murder accused referred to High Court

A final decision on an indictment in the case of Hillbrow mass murder accused Sabelo Ngubane (29) was reached at Johannesburg Regional Court on 13 July.

Ngubane – who stands accused of five counts of murder after shooting and killing three women and two minors in an apartment in Hillbrow in February – has experienced several postponements in the matter.

However, given the serious nature of the offences committed, a provisional decision to refer the matter to the High Court was made on 23 May, prompting the court to hand the docket over to the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for an Advocate to be assigned to the matter.

Ngubane previously abandoned his bail application during a formal bail hearing on 31 May. His reasons for abandoning bail were never disclosed.

The case was postponed to 1 September, where Ngubane is expected to appear in the South Gauteng High Court and a trial date is likely to be set. The court heard that post-mortem statements, crime scene photographs and a ballistic report have been finalised. Ngubane has been remanded in custody at Johannesburg Central Prison pending his next appearance.
