Recycling – SA is behind rest of world

Caren Doyle writes:

South Africans are way behind the rest of the world when it comes to recycling. Places like Norway and Sweden send 1 per cent of their waste to the dump. The rest is all recycled. I am very passionate about this issue as we are going to run out of places to dump all our rubbish and there is no need for us to dump such toxic stuff into our landfills.

The thing is, recycling is not difficult – people are just lazy. Instead of having one bin in your kitchen, just have two smaller bins side by side. For things such as batteries and CFL lights and printer cartridges, there are recycling bins at all the Pick n Pays. I save mine in a bag and take them through every now and then.

For recycling, I use a company called Whole Earth Recycling. The details are and the number is 011 791 4537. They charge R100 plus VAT per month – which is absolutely nothing if you really care about our planet. You do not have to separate your recycling – you chuck it all in the recycling bin bags that they provide and Whole Earth collects it once a week.

As a result, the amount of rubbish that I send to the dump is minuscule. All my vegetable peels go on my compost heap so there’s hardly anything left at all. I would really like to see a follow-up on your column on this – it is of utmost importance that every person recycles and that schools are educated about recycling.
