Spicing up coffee

An iconic drink has finally made its way into eager South African hands.

On 31 August, Starbucks in Rosebank unveiled, for the very first time in the country, the Pumpkin Spice Latte or the PSL.

An ambiance of anticipation and excitement was created as guests at the launch were entertained by artistic trance-jazz singer, RubyGold. There wany selfies and Instagram posts of Starbucks fans with their coffees.

The lucky first-time tasters were encouraged to snap photos of themselves in a photobooth with the hopes of winning a lavish Zomato voucher.

As it is commonly known, this handcrafted drink originates from the US and is usually served hot to accommodate the northern autumn season. On top of this, guests were also treated to a cold version or a PSL Frappe, providing a more refreshing taste to suit the warm Johannesburg evening.

The ingredients used in a PSL include vanilla extract, frothed milk, shots of expresso and of course pumpkin spice. A squirt of whipped cream and a sprinkling of more pumpkin spice finishes off the drink in style.

So what do the locals think of this addition amidst the sea of coffee options already available?

The reception was enthusiastic and many said they would come back for more. One delighted coffee taster, Sarah van Rheede, expressed that she had been waiting a long time for this launch to happen and the wait did not disappoint.
