A team of 10 climbers and their coach took part in the championships run by the International Federation of Sport Climbing.
Robinson (14) was invited to the national team selection competition after he won a bronze medal at the SA U13 lead climbing championships in 2012 and was placed third in the SA U15 National Bouldering League earlier this year.
According to Robinson’s father, Grant, he was one of the best of the South African climbers at the championships.
“He competed in the Youth B Lead competition and the Youth B Speed competition. Although he is only 14 and in his first of two years in this category, he was 38th in the overall lead competition and was placed 17th in the speed climbing competition,” he said.
Robinson took up the sport four years ago under the guidance of St John’s Preparatory School coach Brett Nicolson. His first major success in the sport was his win at the U13 National Championships in 2011.
Robinson went on to win the Gauteng U13 Championships last year, and later placed third in the national U13 competition.
