Head to Montecasino to see multi-award winner Pieter Dirk-Uys

Amidst his much-anticipated, tell-all show Pieter-Dirk Uys has been honoured for his work in theatre by two long-standing institutions.

This year both the Fleur du Cap Awards and South African Film and Television Awards (Safta) highlighted Pieter-Dirk Uys’ incredible contribution to South African theatre with nominations and awards at both events.

Uys was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd Fleur Du Cap Awards, while his story Nobody’s Died Laughing took awards for Best Achievement in Editing (documentary feature), Best Achievement in Sound Design (documentary feature), and Best Documentary Film at the 11th annual Saftas.

For more than 40 years, Uys has been masterfully using theatre and film to tell the South African story. He has challenged the public to laugh in the face of power and see the funny side of fear. He is currently telling this story in his acclaimed one-man memoir The Echo of a Noise playing at Montecasino.

Running from 22 until 9 April The Echo of a Noise has already played to sell-out houses both at the National Arts Festival and the Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town, with ticket sales at Montecasino suggesting the trend will continue.

In The Echo of a Noise, Uys removes the masks, the eyelashes and the personas and opens his heart, evoking a journey into his public and private life. It is the story of the small signposts he followed throughout his life that pointed him in the right direction and recently saw him turn 71 with more than 7 000 performances to his name. It is also the first time Uys tells the story behind the stories, taking the audience into his confidence with his masterful storytelling, tongue-lashing wit and self-effacing humour.

Like all his performances The Echo of a Noise is sensitive to the moods and tensions of the audiences, the news of the day, and the theatre of politics. It’s live, in the moment and emotionally compelling.
