From mourning to healing

GriefShare offers support to those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one.

A grief support group programme, GriefShare, will commence with a 13-week programme at St Charles Catholic Church in Victory Park on 18 February.

The programme, which offers support and compassion to those mourning the death of a loved one, was established in 1999 in the USA by an interdenominational non-profit Christian ministry.

According to South African GriefShare leader, Coralie Deas, those who have not experienced deep grief are often not able to communicate effectively with mourners.

Deas said that in most cases, failure to acquire the necessary support by mourners left them feeling isolated, unable to cope with their environment and their health was affected.

“We offer compassion first and secondly information by means of instructive videos. Thirdly, the leader will ask questions to help them to process their emotions and not remain stuck in their grief,” explained Deas.

During these sessions, participants are invited to share their feelings in a safe and confidential environment. A workbook with daily assignments is provided to help mourners on their journey.

“Together with my co-facilitator, Eileen Simons, we conduct a bible-based Christ-centred weekly seminar. Each Saturday morning session highlights a different aspect of grief.”

All those who wish to participate in the programme can register at a fee of R190 which includes a comprehensive workbook.
